Introduction

Promo cards in Pokémon TCG Pocket are special-printing cards that don't come from regular boosters. Some are pure collectibles. Others are quietly tournament-defining.

This guide explains where promos come from, which are playable, and which are worth farming versus skipping.

What Are Promo Cards?

Promo cards are limited-distribution cards usually tied to events, login campaigns, missions, or premium rewards. They often have unique alt art and a 'P' set indicator.

How To Get Promo Cards

The main sources are: drop event promo packs, mission rewards, login campaigns, premium pass tracks, and limited shop rotations.

See the [Drop Event Farming Guide](/guides/drop-event-farming-guide) for the highest-volume source.

Promo Packs Explained

Promo packs are mini-packs (usually 1 card) earned from event battles. The card pool is fixed to that event's lineup.

Pool sizes vary — some events offer 3-5 cards, others 10+.

Event Promo Cards

Tied to a specific event window. Once the event ends, the cards usually become uncraftable until they're cycled back into a future event or shop rotation.

Which Promo Cards Are Playable?

A meaningful share of promos see competitive play because they're often reprints of meta-relevant cards with new art, or genuinely strong utility trainers.

Always cross-reference with the [Meta Tier List](/guides/meta-tier-list-explained) before deciding whether to farm a specific promo.

Which Promo Cards Are Collection-Only?

Anniversary, special-event, and cosmetic promos. These are great for collectors but not deck builders. Don't burn limited event stamina on them if you're chasing competitive progress.

Should You Farm Every Promo?

No. Match the farming effort to the card's actual value to you. Playable promos = farm hard. Cosmetic promos = casual progress only.

Promo Card Checklist

Check event tab daily. Note which promos are playable. Prioritize farming those before event end. Skip cosmetic-only promos unless your decks are complete.

Frequently Asked Questions

Are promo cards stronger than regular cards?

Mechanically, no — they're balanced like any other card. But because many promos are reprints of staples, they can be very impactful.

Can I get old promo cards I missed?

Sometimes. Older promos occasionally return in shop rotations or revival events, but there's no guarantee.

Are promos tradable?

Often restricted. Check the trade screen for each specific promo card.
