Weaknesses

  • Zoroark ex needs Darkness Pokémon on the Bench to reach its best damage.
  • The deck can become weaker if Bombirdier is removed early.
  • Mega Sableye ex gives up three points when knocked out.
  • Darkrai ex needs Energy attachments to create passive damage.
  • Zoroark ex can struggle against very high-HP Mega Pokémon without chip damage support.

Strategy Overview

Zoroark ex Mega Sableye ex Darkrai ex is a modern Darkness deck built around multiple attackers that each fill a different role. Instead of relying on one Pokémon to win every matchup, the deck can change its game plan depending on the opponent’s board, damage thresholds, and remaining points. The main early-game attacker is Zoroark ex. Its attack, Brutal Bash, deals 30 damage for each Darkness Pokémon on your Bench. With three Darkness Pokémon on the Bench, Zoroark ex can attack for 90 damage with only one Darkness Energy. This makes it one of the most efficient early attackers in the deck and allows you to pressure evolving Pokémon, low-HP support Pokémon, and fragile setup boards before the opponent is fully prepared. Zoroark ex becomes much more consistent because of Zorua. Zorua’s Ascension attack lets it evolve directly into Zoroark ex from your deck. This means you do not always need to have Zoroark ex in hand. As long as Zorua is active, has one Darkness Energy, and survives long enough to use Ascension, it can immediately become Zoroark ex from the deck. This gives the deck a fast evolution line while reducing the usual inconsistency of Stage 1 Pokémon. The deck also uses Bombirdier as its main utility Pokémon. Bombirdier reduces the Retreat Cost of your Active Darkness Pokémon by one Energy while it is on your Bench. This is extremely important because the deck wants to rotate between attackers constantly. Zoroark ex may need to retreat after taking damage, Darkrai ex may need to move into the Active Spot to attack, and Mega Sableye ex may need to be preserved after forcing passive damage onto the opponent. With Bombirdier in play, Zoroark ex can often retreat for free. This gives the deck much more flexibility than most evolution decks. You can attack with Zoroark ex early, retreat it before it is knocked out, heal it with Pokémon Center Lady, or pivot into Mega Sableye ex when you want to punish the opponent for attacking. Mega Sableye ex is the deck’s defensive pressure card. It has 170 HP and attacks for 80 damage with two Darkness Energy. After Mega Sableye ex attacks, if the opponent damages it with an attack during their next turn, the attacking Pokémon takes 40 damage. This effect is extremely strong because it forces the opponent to think carefully before attacking. The Mega Sableye ex plan becomes even stronger with Rocky Helmet. If Mega Sableye ex is holding Rocky Helmet and the opponent attacks into it, they take 20 damage from Rocky Helmet plus 40 damage from Mega Sableye ex’s effect. That means the opponent’s attacker can take 60 damage simply for attacking Mega Sableye ex. This is especially powerful against Pokémon that need to attack multiple times, attackers with lower HP, or opponents who cannot afford to retreat. Mega Sableye ex does not need to knock out everything immediately. Its job is to make the opponent’s attack sequence inefficient and leave their attackers vulnerable to Zoroark ex, Darkrai ex, Cyrus, or Sabrina. Darkrai ex adds another layer of constant pressure. Its Nightmare Aura Ability deals 20 damage to the opponent’s Active Pokémon whenever you attach a Darkness Energy from the Energy Zone to Darkrai ex. This means Darkrai ex can contribute damage even while sitting safely on the Bench. Darkrai ex also has its own attack, Dark Prism, which deals 80 damage for three Darkness Energy. While Dark Prism is not always the deck’s primary attack, Darkrai ex gives you another reliable attacker when Zoroark ex is damaged, Mega Sableye ex is not the correct active Pokémon, or you need the extra 20 passive damage from Nightmare Aura to reach a knockout threshold. This deck wins by creating awkward exchanges. Zoroark ex attacks cheaply. Darkrai ex adds passive chip damage. Mega Sableye ex punishes direct attacks. Bombirdier makes switching between all of these attackers much easier. The opponent is constantly forced to decide whether they should attack, retreat, promote a different Pokémon, or leave a damaged attacker exposed. Key Cards Zoroark ex Zoroark ex is your main early-game attacker. Brutal Bash deals 30 damage for each Darkness Pokémon on your Bench, so building a full Darkness Bench is important. With Bombirdier, Darkrai ex, Mega Sableye ex, and another Zoroark ex or Zorua on the Bench, Zoroark ex can quickly reach 90 damage for one Darkness Energy. This gives the deck excellent tempo and lets you start trading damage before your bigger attackers are fully powered up. Do not treat Zoroark ex as disposable just because it is your early attacker. It is a two-point Pokémon, and Bombirdier gives you the option to retreat it efficiently. When Zoroark ex has taken meaningful damage, consider switching into Mega Sableye ex or Darkrai ex rather than allowing the opponent to take an easy knockout. Zorua Zorua is more than an evolution starter. Its Ascension attack is one of the reasons the deck is so consistent. When Zorua is active, you can use Ascension to evolve directly into Zoroark ex from your deck. This means Zorua can find your evolution even when Zoroark ex is not in your hand. In many games, Zorua is your ideal opening Pokémon because it can become a threatening attacker very quickly. Try to protect Zorua from early knockouts when possible. If you can use Ascension successfully, the opponent must immediately deal with a 150-HP Zoroark ex instead of a small Basic Pokémon. Mega Sableye ex Mega Sableye ex is the deck’s punishment attacker. Its 80 damage is solid, but its real strength is the counter-damage effect after attacking. Once Mega Sableye ex attacks, the opponent has an uncomfortable choice. If they attack Mega Sableye ex during their next turn, their attacker takes 40 damage. If Mega Sableye ex is holding Rocky Helmet, that attacker takes 60 total damage. This can make Mega Sableye ex especially strong against decks that rely on one main attacker. Even when the opponent knocks out Mega Sableye ex, they may leave their own attacker damaged enough to be finished by Zoroark ex, Darkrai ex, Cyrus, or Sabrina. Remember that Mega Sableye ex gives up three points when knocked out. Do not send it active without a plan. It should either force a favorable damage exchange, deny the opponent a clean knockout sequence, or create a winning counterattack. Darkrai ex Darkrai ex gives the deck consistent passive pressure through Nightmare Aura. Every Darkness Energy attached to Darkrai ex from the Energy Zone deals 20 damage to the opponent’s Active Pokémon. This damage is especially valuable because it can be combined with every other part of the deck. A Darkrai ex Energy attachment plus a Zoroark ex attack can turn 90 damage into an effective 110-damage turn. It can also help Mega Sableye ex reach more important damage thresholds after the opponent has taken Rocky Helmet and counter-damage. Darkrai ex should often stay on the Bench during the early turns. Its Ability is valuable even when it is not attacking. Move it into the Active Spot only when Dark Prism reaches a relevant knockout, when you need a sturdier attacker, or when the opponent has already used most of their disruption tools. Bombirdier Bombirdier is the mobility engine of the deck. Its Ability reduces the Retreat Cost of your Active Darkness Pokémon by one Energy. This is especially important for Zoroark ex, which can often retreat for free with Bombirdier in play. The ability allows you to preserve damaged attackers, pivot into Mega Sableye ex, and avoid losing turns to expensive retreats. Protect Bombirdier whenever possible. It may only be a one-copy utility Pokémon, but the deck feels significantly less flexible without it. Rocky Helmet Rocky Helmet is best attached to Mega Sableye ex. When the opponent attacks Mega Sableye ex, Rocky Helmet deals 20 damage back to the attacking Pokémon. Combined with Mega Sableye ex’s own 40 counter-damage effect, the opponent takes 60 damage for attacking. Rocky Helmet can also be useful on Zoroark ex when the opponent is forced to attack it, but Mega Sableye ex is usually the stronger target. Giant Cape Giant Cape provides additional HP and is generally best used on Zoroark ex or Darkrai ex. It can push an attacker above a key knockout threshold and force the opponent to spend another turn attacking. Use Giant Cape based on the matchup. If Zoroark ex is your main early attacker, attach it there. If Darkrai ex will be your long-game attacker, placing Giant Cape on Darkrai ex can make it much harder to remove.

Early Game

Your early-game goal is to establish Zorua, fill your Bench with Darkness Pokémon, and use Ascension to evolve into Zoroark ex. Try to bench Bombirdier early when possible. It helps with future retreats and makes your board much more flexible. Darkrai ex is also an excellent early Bench Pokémon because it can begin applying Nightmare Aura damage once you attach Darkness Energy to it. Poké Ball should usually search for the missing Basic Pokémon in your setup. If you already have Zorua, prioritize Bombirdier or Darkrai ex. If you have no Zorua, finding it is usually your highest priority. Professor’s Research helps stabilize weak hands, while Copycat is strongest when the opponent has built a large hand. Do not use Copycat automatically. It is most valuable when it gives you more cards than your current hand contains.

Mid Game

During the mid game, Zoroark ex should apply early pressure while Darkrai ex adds passive damage from the Bench. Use Brutal Bash to remove low-HP Pokémon, pressure evolving Pokémon, and force the opponent to react. If Zoroark ex becomes damaged, Bombirdier lets you retreat it efficiently and bring in a different attacker. Mega Sableye ex becomes important when the opponent is likely to attack into it. Attach Rocky Helmet before using Mega Sableye ex whenever possible. Your ideal sequence is simple: Attack with Mega Sableye ex. Force the opponent to damage it. Deal 40 counter-damage through Mega Sableye ex. Deal another 20 damage through Rocky Helmet. Finish the damaged attacker with Zoroark ex, Darkrai ex, Cyrus, or Sabrina. Field Blower is your answer to opposing Tools and Stadiums. Use it carefully. Removing an opposing Giant Cape, Elegant Cape, Rocky Helmet, or defensive Tool can completely change the damage math of a turn.

Late Game

The late game is about point management and forcing the opponent into bad exchanges. Mega Sableye ex is powerful, but it gives up three points when knocked out. Before sending it active, check the opponent’s remaining points. If losing Mega Sableye ex immediately loses the game, you may need to retreat, heal, or use Zoroark ex instead. Cyrus is a strong finishing card when the opponent has a damaged Pokémon on the Bench. Darkrai ex and Rocky Helmet often create the extra chip damage needed for Cyrus to become a knockout tool. Sabrina is useful when you want to disrupt the opponent’s active attacker, force up a Pokémon with a high Retreat Cost, or create an awkward board state. It can be especially strong after Mega Sableye ex has damaged the opponent’s main attacker and they try to hide it on the Bench. Pokémon Center Lady is best used when healing 30 damage changes a knockout threshold. Do not use it simply because you can heal. Save it for situations where the opponent would otherwise knock out Zoroark ex, Darkrai ex, or Mega Sableye ex with their next attack.
