Strategy Overview

Suicune ex Chien-Pao ex Baxcalibur is one of the most established Water decks in Pokémon TCG Pocket. It has remained relevant through multiple format shifts because it does not rely on one single plan. Instead, it combines early-game draw power, scalable damage, Stage 2 Energy acceleration, and a targeted finishing attack that can hit anywhere on the opponent’s board. The deck is built around three major Pokémon: Suicune ex, Baxcalibur, and Chien-Pao ex. Suicune ex is usually the first attacker you want to establish. It belongs in the Active Spot for as long as possible because of its Legendary Pulse Ability. At the end of your turn, if Suicune ex is Active, Legendary Pulse lets you draw an extra card. That additional card every turn may not look overwhelming at first, but in Pokémon TCG Pocket, where deck sizes are small and every draw matters, it creates a major consistency advantage. Suicune ex also attacks efficiently. Crystal Waltz costs two Water Energy and deals 20 damage for each Benched Pokémon in play, including both your Bench and your opponent’s Bench. With a reasonably full board, the attack can easily reach 80, 100, or even 120 damage. This creates an important decision for both players. You want to develop your own Bench for stronger Crystal Waltz damage, but your opponent may also be forced to think twice before filling their Bench with setup Pokémon. That makes Suicune ex much more than a draw engine. It is a real early- and mid-game attacker that punishes players who overbench. It can pressure a developing board while helping you find Baxcalibur, Rare Candy, Chien-Pao ex, and your important Trainer cards. Baxcalibur is the deck’s Energy engine. As a Stage 2 Water Pokémon, Baxcalibur takes more setup than Suicune ex, but once it is on the Bench, it gives the deck the ability to attach an additional Water Energy from the Energy Zone to your Active Pokémon each turn. That changes the pace of the entire game. With Baxcalibur in play, Suicune ex can be powered more quickly, a fresh Chien-Pao ex can become a surprise attacker, and the deck can rebuild after Chien-Pao ex discards its Energy. The main objective is usually to establish at least one Baxcalibur as early as possible. In longer games, having a second Baxcalibur line can be even stronger because it gives you insurance against knockouts and lets your Water Energy engine continue functioning. Chien-Pao ex is the deck’s finisher and board-control weapon. For one Energy, it has a modest attack that can deal 20 damage. That is not the reason it is played. Its real power comes from Diving Icicles. For three Water Energy, Chien-Pao ex can deal 130 damage to any Pokémon on the opponent’s field. It does not need to attack the Active Spot. It can target a damaged Bench Pokémon, an important support Pokémon, a fragile evolution piece, or a benched ex Pokémon that the opponent thought was safe. The drawback is that Chien-Pao ex discards all of its attached Energy after using Diving Icicles. That means Chien-Pao ex is usually not the attacker you want to lead with every game. It is the card you hold until the board state is right. Once the opponent has a damaged Bench Pokémon or a key target hiding behind a bulky Active Pokémon, Chien-Pao ex can take a prize from almost anywhere. This is why Suicune ex and Chien-Pao ex work so well together. Suicune ex applies early pressure, keeps you drawing cards, and forces the opponent to develop their Bench. Then Chien-Pao ex punishes that Bench once Baxcalibur is online. The deck also uses several defensive and consistency cards to make its Legendary Pokémon harder to remove. Starting Plains gives Basic Pokémon on both sides additional HP. In this deck, that matters because Suicune ex and Chien-Pao ex are both Basic Pokémon. More HP makes their prize trade much better against common damage thresholds. Giant Cape adds even more durability. Attaching Giant Cape to Suicune ex can make it significantly harder to knock out while it continues using Legendary Pulse and Crystal Waltz. Attaching it to Chien-Pao ex can protect your late-game finisher and force the opponent to commit more resources before removing it. Inflatable Boat is another useful utility Tool. It reduces retreat pressure for Water Pokémon and can help move a damaged Suicune ex or Chien-Pao ex out of the Active Spot. That is especially important when Suicune ex has already generated value through Legendary Pulse but is no longer the right attacker for the turn. Pokémon Center Lady is included because status conditions remain relevant in the current environment. Sleep, Poison, Burn, and other effects can disrupt an expensive attacker turn. Pokémon Center Lady heals damage and removes a Special Condition, which can be the difference between losing a fully powered Suicune ex and continuing your attack plan. Professor’s Research, Copycat, Poké Ball, and Rare Candy provide the consistency needed to get Baxcalibur online. Rare Candy is particularly important because it allows Frigibax to evolve directly into Baxcalibur without waiting through an intermediate stage. This lets the deck create explosive turns where Chien-Pao ex is suddenly powered and ready to attack. The biggest strength of the archetype is that it can pivot between three different game plans. It can win through Suicune ex damage, through Baxcalibur-powered tempo, or through Chien-Pao ex snipes. The opponent can defend against one route, but often struggles to defend against all three.

Early Game

The early game is about getting Suicune ex Active, building your Bench, and preparing the Baxcalibur line without exposing too many fragile Pokémon. Your best opener is often Suicune ex in the Active Spot with at least one Frigibax on the Bench. Suicune ex gives you an extra draw through Legendary Pulse at the end of every turn it remains Active, so the earlier it begins generating cards, the smoother your setup becomes. Use Poké Ball early to find whichever Basic Pokémon you are missing. If you already have Suicune ex, prioritize Frigibax. If you have Frigibax but no strong Active Pokémon, find Suicune ex. Chien-Pao ex can also be benched early, but do not attach all your Energy to it too quickly unless you already know it will be your next attacker. Starting Plains is especially valuable in the opening turns because it makes Suicune ex and Chien-Pao ex more difficult to knock out. If the opponent is using a deck that relies on a precise damage threshold, the extra HP can force them into an awkward two-hit knockout. Avoid overbenching blindly. Crystal Waltz benefits from both Benches, but you should still protect your Frigibax line. A full Bench is only good when the Pokémon on it contribute to your plan.

Mid Game

The mid game begins when Baxcalibur comes online. This is the point where the deck becomes much more dangerous because your Water Energy can be attached faster and your attacker options expand. Suicune ex often remains your primary attacker during this phase. Crystal Waltz is efficient, especially when both players have developed boards. At the same time, Legendary Pulse keeps your hand full enough to find Cyrus, Rare Candy, Pokémon Center Lady, Chien-Pao ex, or a replacement attacker. Baxcalibur should usually stay protected on the Bench. It does not need to attack to create value. Its job is to ensure that your Active Pokémon can keep receiving Water Energy and that Chien-Pao ex becomes live when the opponent makes a mistake. This is also where you should begin thinking about Chien-Pao ex targets. Look at the opponent’s Bench every turn. Which Pokémon is easiest to finish with 130 damage? Which support Pokémon would stop their next turn if removed? Which damaged ex Pokémon is trying to hide? Cyrus becomes much stronger once your opponent has damaged Bench Pokémon. Suicune ex can soften an Active attacker, while Chien-Pao ex can threaten elsewhere. Cyrus lets you pull up a weakened target when the opponent least expects it.

Late Game

Late game is about exact prize mapping. Chien-Pao ex becomes especially dangerous once the opponent has fewer safe Bench options. Your final prize plan should usually answer one question: is it better to keep attacking with Suicune ex, or is there a Chien-Pao ex Diving Icicles target that ends the game immediately? If a 130-damage snipe wins the game, do not hesitate. Chien-Pao ex exists to punish targets that hide on the Bench. Baxcalibur makes it possible to power Chien-Pao ex quickly, even after a previous attacker has fallen. If Chien-Pao ex has already used Diving Icicles and discarded all Energy, do not panic. Baxcalibur lets the deck rebuild faster than most other Water strategies. The important part is not keeping one Chien-Pao ex permanently powered. It is creating the right one-turn knockout when it matters. Pokémon Center Lady can be extremely important late. A Sleeping or damaged Suicune ex is much weaker than a healthy Suicune ex continuing to draw cards. Remove the status, heal enough damage to escape a knockout range, and force the opponent to spend another turn dealing with it.
