Guide

The Mind Control deck is built around one of the most unusual strategies in NARUTO: Ninja Cards: temporarily taking control of rival cards and using their own board against them.

Ino Yamanaka – Mind Transfer and Inoichi Yamanaka – Mind Destruction are the centerpieces of the deck. Both use Focus to temporarily take control of a rival card, but they target and disrupt the opponent in different ways.

Ino targets the highest-Chakra lane rival in Mid Range. After entering Focus(8s), she takes control of that card until her Focus ends. This makes her especially interesting when the opponent commits a powerful high-Chakra card to her lane.

Inoichi takes the strategy even further. On deploy, Mind Destruction enters Focus(10s) and takes control of the closest lane rival in Mid Range. That card is also affected by Slow(10s), and any active skill it has is permanently disabled. Once Inoichi's Focus ends, control returns to the opponent, but the disabled active skill remains disabled.

The rest of the deck supports these control effects with Focus, Chakra generation and Pin. Shikamaru – Shogi Master rewards allied cards whenever they Focus, while the Old Friends trio creates an additional Chakra engine between Choza, Shikaku and Inoichi.

Instead of simply overpowering the opponent with your own cards, this deck tries to disrupt their strongest plays, steal their momentum and create value from the cards they committed against you.

Strategy — how the deck works

1. Choose the Right Mind Control Target

Ino – Mind Transfer specifically targets the highest-Chakra lane rival in Mid Range.

That makes her best when the opponent has already committed an important high-Chakra card to the lane. Deploying her without a valuable target can waste one of the deck's biggest opportunities.

Inoichi – Mind Destruction instead targets the closest lane rival in Mid Range. Because the target is determined differently, positioning matters much more when setting up Inoichi.

2. Mind Destruction Is More Than Temporary Control

Inoichi doesn't simply steal the card.

He also:

Slow(10s) → temporarily takes control → permanently disables any active skill

That last part is particularly important.

Even after Focus ends and the rival gets their card back, the active skill that Inoichi disabled does not come back.

This means Mind Destruction can still generate lasting disruption even though the actual control is temporary.

3. Shogi Master Rewards Your Focus Effects

Shikamaru Nara – Shogi Master is one of the key support cards.

When an allied card Focuses while Shikamaru is active, that ally gains:

Chakra(+3)

That gives you a natural connection with:

Ino – Mind Transfer Inoichi – Mind Destruction Jiraiya – Advanced Training Akahoshi – Deceitful Training

This turns Focus from simply being a requirement for your control effects into another source of Chakra value.

4. The Old Friends Engine

The three Old Friends cards support each other:

Choza Akimichi – Old Friends → Chakra(+1) to allied Shikaku and Inoichi cards.

Shikaku Nara – Old Friends → Chakra(+1) to allied Inoichi and Choza cards.

Inoichi Yamanaka – Old Friends → Chakra(+1) to allied Choza and Shikaku cards.

With multiple members active, you create a compact Chakra-support package while also giving the deck another Inoichi card to benefit from Choza and Shikaku.

5. Jiraiya Adds Another Focus Payoff

Jiraiya – Advanced Training gives the deck another way to use Focus.

When deployed, a lane ally with 3 or less Chakra enters Focus(8s). If that Focus succeeds, the ally gains Chakra(+3).

With Shogi Master active, Focus itself can also trigger Shikamaru's Chakra support.

This gives the deck a secondary game plan when you aren't immediately setting up Mind Transfer or Mind Destruction.

6. Akahoshi Needs Careful Testing

Akahoshi – Deceitful Training causes allied Focus effects to gain Focus(+4s) and applies Weaken(1) to allies every four seconds during Focus.

There is an obvious potential interaction here with Ino and Inoichi because their control effects last until their Focus ends.

However, I would not yet describe this as confirmed extended Mind Control.

That's one of the most important interactions to test during the video:

Does Akahoshi's Focus extension also extend how long we control the rival card?

If it does, this becomes one of the deck's headline combos. If it doesn't, we keep Akahoshi positioned primarily as Focus support.

7. Cheap Control Buys Time

Naruto – Sexy Jutsu gives you a cheap Pin option.

That matters because this isn't an aggressive Rush deck. Sometimes you simply need to stop a threatening rival long enough to establish Shikamaru, the Old Friends engine or one of your Mind Control cards.

Kin – Bell Needles provides another disruption tool within the list.

Key Combos Ino + High-Chakra Rival

Opponent commits a high-Chakra card → Ino – Mind Transfer → Focus(8s) → take control of the highest-Chakra lane rival in Mid Range → control ends when Focus ends

The opponent effectively supplies the powerful card you're trying to exploit.

Inoichi + Important Active Skill

Important rival enters Mid Range → Inoichi – Mind Destruction → Slow(10s) → temporarily take control → permanently disable its active skill → return the card after Focus

This is arguably the nastiest control sequence in the deck because part of the disruption remains after you give the card back.

Shikamaru + Mind Control

Shikamaru – Shogi Master active → Ino/Inoichi Focus → Chakra(+3)

Your primary control mechanic now also generates Chakra.

Old Friends Trio

Choza + Shikaku + Inoichi

Each card provides Chakra support to the other members specified by its skill, creating an interconnected support engine behind your Mind Control strategy.

Strengths

  • Unique Mind Control strategy
  • Can temporarily take control of powerful rival cards
  • Ino naturally targets high-Chakra threats
  • Inoichi permanently disables active skills
  • Strong Focus synergy with Shikamaru
  • Old Friends provides additional Chakra support
  • Can punish opponents for committing powerful cards
  • Multiple forms of control and disruption
  • Interesting decision-making around positioning and timing
  • Can generate value without relying purely on raw Power

Weaknesses

  • Mind Control effects require specific positioning and targets
  • Ino needs a rival in Mid Range to get full value
  • Inoichi targets the closest rival rather than freely choosing a target
  • Control from Ino and Inoichi is temporary
  • Several important cards have high deployment costs
  • Focus effects create setup windows
  • Poor timing can waste Mind Transfer or Mind Destruction
  • Old Friends requires multiple pieces for maximum value
  • Akahoshi can Weaken your own cards during Focus
  • Several key interactions still need gameplay testing

Matchup & gameplay notes

Don't deploy Ino just because you can. Mind Transfer becomes much more valuable when the opponent has committed a high-Chakra target worth controlling.

Positioning is crucial for Inoichi. Mind Destruction takes the closest lane rival in Mid Range, so watch the opponent's lane before deploying him.

Prioritize dangerous active skills with Mind Destruction. Temporary control is useful, but permanently disabling an important active skill can continue hurting the opponent after their card is returned.

Shikamaru should ideally be established before your major Focus cards. This allows Mind Transfer and Mind Destruction to become Chakra-generating plays as well as control effects.

Don't force the complete Old Friends setup every game. The trio provides useful support, but your primary win condition is still creating high-value control plays.

Be careful with Akahoshi. Longer Focus can potentially be valuable, but his repeated Weaken effect means there is a real cost to keeping allied cards in Focus.

Use cheap disruption to create setup time. Naruto can help delay an important rival while you prepare your more expensive control pieces.
