However, Pokémon is keeping most of the details under wraps for now. No release date or specific Pokémon TCG expansion containing the first ex★ cards has been announced yet. We have also not yet seen the complete ex★ cards themselves, meaning their attacks, Abilities, Rule Boxes and any special rules associated with the new designation remain unknown. That leaves one particularly important question: What exactly is a Pokémon ex★? Could ex★ represent a completely new gameplay mechanic? Is the ★ connected to the classic Pokémon ☆ / Gold Star cards of the EX era? Is it simply a new card classification or rarity? And, for digital players, what will Pokémon ex★ mean for Pokémon TCG Live? Below, we'll break down everything confirmed about Pokémon ex★ so far, its fascinating connection to the original Gold Star Pokémon, what remains unconfirmed, and what the new ex★ series could eventually mean for the competitive Pokémon TCG and Pokémon TCG Live.

The short teaser focuses on Suicune, Raikou and Entei before revealing the ex★ branding. Importantly, the video is a teaser rather than a full mechanical reveal. It establishes the three Legendary Pokémon and ex★ concept, but does not yet explain how ex★ cards function during a game. That distinction is important: we know Pokémon ex★ is coming, but we do not yet know its rules.
Suicune, Raikou and Entei are the first three Pokémon associated with Pokémon ex★. Their selection is particularly interesting because all three Pokémon also have history with the original Pokémon ☆ cards from the EX era of the Pokémon TCG.
What Is Pokémon ex★?
At the moment, the simplest answer is: we don't fully know yet. Pokémon has teased the name and visual identity of Pokémon ex★, but the information required to understand the actual gameplay mechanic has not yet been revealed. Is ex★ a New Pokémon TCG Rarity?

Pokémon ☆: The Original Gold Star Cards
The ★ symbol is not new to the Pokémon TCG. Long-time players and collectors may immediately associate the new Pokémon ex★ branding with Pokémon ☆, better known as Gold Star Pokémon, which first appeared during the EX era of the Pokémon Trading Card Game. Gold Star cards were among the most distinctive cards of their generation. They typically depicted Shiny Pokémon, with part of the Pokémon artwork extending beyond the normal illustration frame. Famous examples include Pikachu ☆, Vaporeon ☆ and Rayquaza ☆, alongside many other highly sought-after Pokémon. Importantly, Pokémon ☆ was more than just a special rarity or visual treatment. These cards also carried a unique deck-building rule: a player could not have more than one Pokémon ☆ in their deck. This allowed individual Gold Star Pokémon to be designed as particularly special cards while restricting how many a player could bring into a game. That history makes the newly revealed ex★ name especially interesting. Combining the familiar Pokémon ex designation with a ★ immediately invites comparisons with the original Gold Star era. It is therefore possible that Pokémon is revisiting the idea of particularly powerful or limited Pokémon through ex★. However, there is currently no confirmation that Pokémon ex★ cards will follow the old Gold Star rule, nor that they are a direct revival of Pokémon ☆. The similarity could represent a deliberate homage while introducing an entirely different modern mechanic.
There is another reason the Gold Star comparison is particularly relevant to the ex★ teaser: Suicune, Raikou and Entei themselves have history as Pokémon ☆. All three Legendary beasts received Gold Star cards during the EX era. Their return as the first Pokémon associated with ex★ therefore makes the historical connection especially intriguing. Whether that is simply a nostalgic reference or a genuine clue to how the new ex★ mechanic will work remains one of the biggest unanswered questions.
Could ex★ Work Like Pokémon VSTAR?
Another theory is that ex★ could introduce a restriction similar in philosophy to the VSTAR Power mechanic. During the Sword & Shield era, VSTAR Powers gave players access to extremely strong attacks or Abilities, but a player could use only one VSTAR Power during an entire game. A modern ex★ mechanic could theoretically fill a similar design space: a particularly powerful Pokémon ex or effect balanced by a once-per-game rule or another limitation. There is currently no evidence confirming that ex★ works this way, though. No ex★ Ability, attack, Rule Box or card text has been revealed that establishes a VSTAR-style mechanic. For competitive players, this is one of the biggest details to watch. A once-per-game effect would have a very different impact on deck construction and matchup strategy than a Gold Star-style one-per-deck restriction.
Why Suicune, Raikou and Entei?
The first three Pokémon shown for ex★ are the Legendary beasts of Johto: Suicune, Raikou and Entei. Aside from their popularity, the trio is particularly appropriate for a mechanic involving a star because of their connection to older generations of the Pokémon TCG. The Pokémon TCG has previously printed these Legendary Pokémon across numerous special card types, including Pokémon ex and Pokémon ☆. Interestingly, Raikou has also very recently received a regular Raikou ex in the Japanese Storm Emeralda expansion, demonstrating that ordinary Pokémon ex continue to exist alongside whatever Pokémon has planned for ex★. That could make ex★ an extension of the current Pokémon ex system rather than a replacement for it — although, again, we'll need the first actual cards to know for certain.
What Could ex★ Mean for Pokémon TCG Live?
For Pokémon TCG Live players, this is arguably the most important question. If Pokémon ex★ is introduced as part of the regular internationally released Pokémon TCG and its cards are legal in the formats supported by Pokémon TCG Live, we would expect the cards to eventually become part of TCG Live as well. What we cannot yet determine is how much the mechanic will change the competitive game. If ex★ uses a deck-building restriction, players may have to decide which single ex★ Pokémon provides the most value to a particular archetype. If it introduces a once-per-game effect, timing that effect could become an important part of matchup strategy. And if ex★ changes the Prize trade in some way, it could fundamentally affect how decks map out their six Prizes. Those possibilities could have significant consequences for: deck building, Prize mapping, consistency, tech choices, matchup planning and the overall competitive meta. But none of those specific mechanics are confirmed yet. For now, Pokémon TCG Live players should treat ex★ as an upcoming development to watch, rather than start planning decks around rules that have not been announced.
Is This Connected to Pokémon TCG Pocket?
This is particularly easy to confuse because Pokémon TCG Pocket has already featured all three Legendary beasts as Pokémon ex. For example, Suicune ex, Raikou ex and Entei ex appeared in Pocket's Secluded Springs expansion, where they share the Legendary Pulse Ability. Pokémon TCG Pocket and the physical Pokémon Trading Card Game use different card pools and game rules. The presence of the same three Pokémon in Pocket therefore does not tell us how the newly teased Pokémon ex★ cards will work in the main TCG. For players primarily interested in Pokémon TCG Live, the important information will be the eventual reveal of the physical TCG cards and their international release.
