A Pokémon TCG Pocket set is a self-contained card release with its own set code, themed packs, and rarity distribution. Each set is the basic unit of expansion content — packs you open, Wonder Picks you spin, and crafting choices you make all anchor back to the set the card belongs to. Understanding the set structure makes every other resource decision in Pocket easier.
Set codes follow a short, predictable pattern: A1 is the original Genetic Apex expansion, A1a is the Mythical Island mini-set, A2 is Space-Time Smackdown, A2a is Triumphant Light, A2b is Shining Revelry, and so on. Mini-sets (a, b suffixes) typically ship between major releases and add ~70 cards, while main numbered expansions ship 200+. Knowing whether a set is a main release or a mini-set tells you roughly how long it will dominate Wonder Picks and Pack Hourglass spending.
Card acquisition inside a set works three ways. Opening packs from the set with Pack Hourglasses is the cheapest path but the slowest; Wonder Picks are the most efficient way to target a specific card before it leaves rotation; and direct crafting with Pack Points is the fallback when both pack opening and Wonder Picks miss. Each path is per-set, so converting duplicates from Genetic Apex won't help you craft a Space-Time Smackdown card.
Meta impact of expansions follows a clear pattern: each new release brings a small number of pushed Pokémon ex and Trainer cards that immediately reshape the tier list, plus a long tail of niche options that show up later as the meta adapts. Track each set against our tier list and deck guides to see which cards moved decks up or down — that's the practical way to plan crafting priorities for the next 30 to 60 days.
Collectors approach the same sets differently. Alternate-art and immersive cards are typically the rarest pulls from a set and become harder to obtain once the set rotates out of the active Wonder Pick pool, so chasing alt-arts you care about is a per-set time-sensitive decision. The set browser on this page is the starting point for both competitive crafting and collection planning.
A set (or expansion) is a batch of cards released together — each set ships with a fixed card count, themed packs (for example A1 launched with Charizard, Mewtwo, and Pikachu packs), and its own set code. Sets define which cards are obtainable through Pack Hourglasses and which packs to target during events.
Pocket expansions are smaller (typically 200–300 cards), include exclusive art, and use Pocket's Diamond/Star/Crown rarity system instead of the paper TCG rarities. Some Pocket cards are reprints with new art; others are designed specifically for Pocket and don't exist in the paper game.
Open packs from that set using Pack Hourglasses (earned in-game) or Poké Gold, target the set with Wonder Picks during in-app events, or craft individual cards directly using Pack Points earned from duplicates. Newer sets typically have higher Wonder Pick activity.
The most recent two or three expansions usually define the meta, because new mechanics and stronger Pokémon ex frequently power Tier S decks. Older sets still matter for staple Trainer cards. Cross-reference each set with our tier list and deck guides to see exactly which cards are seeing play.
